비행기도 아니었다. 기차도 아니었다.
러시아 연해주 답사를 떠나는 답사팀이 몸을 실은 것은 커다란 '배'였다.
대한민국 강원도 속초항에서 러시아 연해주의 자루비노항까지, 17시간 동안을 밤새워
항해하는 '동춘페리'라는 여객선에 몸을 싣고, 한국과 러시아 국경을 통과하는
독특한 경험부터가 이번 답사 여행의 시작이었다.
'동북아 평화연대'라는 NGO 단체를 주축으로,
아침편지 문화재단 고도원 이사장 부부와 '아침편지 사랑의 집짓기'로
잘 알려진 노블하우스의 류재관 대표 부부, 그리고 아침지기 다섯 명, 이렇게
모두 아홉 사람이 함께 동행하여 고려인들의 삶의 터전이 되고 있는 발해의 옛 땅
연해주의 우정마을을 돌아보고 고려인들이 일구어놓은 농업 현장과 실험 농장,
샤마라 해변, 그리고 항구 도시 블라디보스톡을 돌아보는 것이
이번 러시아 답사의 주된 일정이었다.
옛 고구려보다 두 배나 넓었다는 발해의 땅,
발해의 역사를 공부하기 위해 떠난 여행은 아니었다.
안으로만 좁혀진 시선을 밖으로 돌려, 유채꽃이 지평선을 이루고
비료도 농약도 쳐지지 않은 순 자연 그대로의 콩밭이 저 멀리 끝도 보이지
않는 가능성의 땅, 깨끗한 땅, 비옥한 땅, 자연그대로의 땅...
한때는 웅대했으나 아프고도 슬픈 역사가 켜켜이 밴,
그러나 이제는 새로운 꿈과 희망이 솟구치고 있는
그 땅을 찾아 '마음의 영토'를 넓혀가는
꿈너머꿈의 여행이었다.
연해주(沿海州)...
러시아 이름같지 않아 왠지 낯설지 않은 그 곳엔 많은 것들이 우리를
기다리고 있었지만, '고려인'들을 빼놓고는 연해주를 이야기 할 수 없을 정도로
그늘진 역사의 한 페이지가 여전히 가슴 아픈 모습으로 살아 숨쉬고 있었고,
그 곳의 중심에 '동북아 평화연대'가 있었다.
그동안 여러 민족들간의 전쟁등 험난했던 역사로부터 벗어나 화해와 상생,
함께 공존하며 살아가는 동북아시아를 만들고, 특히 이 지역에 흩어져 살고 있는
한민족이 앞장서서 다른 민족, 다른 문화의 집합체인 동북아시아의 평화를 만드는 것,
그것을 꿈으로 가지고 있는 '동북아 평화연대(이후로는 '동평'이라 지칭)'.
'동평'이 5년여에 걸쳐 만든 연해주의 고려인 정착촌인
'우정마을'을 둘러보는 것으로 시작된 러시아 연해주 답사 여행에서
우리는 강제이주를 당했던 고려인들, 중국에서 넘어온 조선족들,
현지 러시아인들, 심심치 않게 마주치는 북한 동포들,
중국을 대표하는 한족들을 실제로 만나기도 하고,
수많은 이야기를 들을 수 있었다.
무언가 연관이 전혀 없는 듯 하지만
너무나 큰 연결고리가 되고 있는 그들이 모여 사는 곳 연해주는
만경평야의 수십수백 곱절에 이르는 끝도 없이 펼쳐진 초원과 야생 콩밭,
그 넓은 영토에 비해 턱없이 부족한 인구, 눈부실 정도로 아름다운
러시아 여인들과 항상 술에 취해 있는 듯한 인상의 러시아 남자들,
당장 쓰러질 듯 낡았지만 한 때는 무척이나 번성했던 곳이었음을
보여주는 위엄있고 기품있는 건물들이 인상적인 곳이었다.
사실 이번 답사 여행은 몽골, 바이칼, 샹그릴라에 이은
또 하나의 특별한 아침편지 여행이 탄생될 것이라는 기대감 또한 안고
떠난 여행이기도 했었다. 그러나 여행이 시작되고 얼마 지나지 않아
기대감을 뛰어넘는 무언가가 내 머릿속을 섬광처럼 지나가는
강한 느낌을 받았다. '이번엔 뭔가 다르다.'
그 '뭔가 다른' 느낌은 어디에서 연유했을까.
지금까지의 단순한 둘러보기 식의 답사 여행 차원을 벗어나
마치 저 멀리 꿈을 향해 가는 길에 반드시 보아야 할 것들이
있다는 것을 누군가 때가 되어 알려주는 것 같은, 천년의 역사를
거슬러 민족 혼의 시원(始源)을 본 듯 하고 그리 멀지 않은 미래에
어차피 한 길을 가야 할 북한 동포까지를 포함하여 지금의 우리와
우리 후손들이 건너가야 할 미래의 징검다리가 바로 이곳
연해주에 있다는 생각, 그 '새로운 발견'이 '뭔가 다른'
느낌을 안겨준 것은 아니었을까?
무엇보다 140년에 걸쳐 강제 이주와 재이주를 통해
이곳 연해주 우정마을에 정착한 몇 안되는 '고려인'들을 보면서
기억 저 멀리서 새록새록 솟아나는 아픔을 느꼈고, 그 감정은
다른 답사 여행때는 느끼지 못했던 것들이었다.
2004년 기아대책기구 홍보대사이기도 한 고도원님과 함께
중앙아시아의 우즈베키스탄, 타지키스탄, 키르키즈스탄을 동행하며 보고 듣고
느끼고 가슴에 담아 온 글을 '윤나라의 중앙아시아 여행스케치'란 이름으로
아침편지를 통해 처음으로 내보냈던 기억...그때 아린 마음으로 보고
들었던 태바짐님을 비롯한 중앙아시아 고려인들의
처절했던 삶이 다시금 가슴에 되살아났다.
사회적, 정치적, 역사적 상황이 돌변하면서
그 누구도 손을 쓸 수 없는 상황에까지 이른 중앙아시아의 고려인들을 보며
그들의 절망이 내 절망처럼 느껴져 돌아오는 발걸음이 내내 무거웠던
그때의 마음이 연해주 우정마을에 재이주 후 정착해 반짝이는
눈빛으로 다시금 희망을 얘기하는 고려인들을 보면서
작지만 분명한 희망을 발견하게 된 것, 이것이
나에게 이번 여행이 필연코 확실히 '다른'
여행임을 다시금 깨닫게 한 것이다.
" 정말 잘 왔다. 그러나 어떤 면에서는 조금 늦었다."
고도원님이 여행 중반 혼잣말처럼 하신 이 말이 내 머리 속에
남아 아직도 작은 파도을 일으키고 있다. 가장 늦었다고 생각할 때가
가장 빠른 때, 가장 적기라고 생각했다. 때가 되어 다녀온 듯한
연해주, 정말 잘 다녀왔다.
